On November 23rd 2018 I led a short presentation on Performance Anxiety at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education's conference: Art for Education.
A brief description of the presentation:
The Performance anxiety has been debilitating artists for as long as we can remember, and yet it remains a prevalent issue to many modern artists. There is a solution that has the potential to rid any artist of this suffering through the work of David Gorman called LearningMethods. While I come from a music background, this work is applicable to artists and educators of any background. In fact, the LearningMethods work has resonated with artists from many different art forms and is now being taught by trained LearningMethods teachers in various educational institutions. Contrary to prevalent pedagogy which offers solutions for symptoms (i.e. tension, anxiety, etc.), LearningMethods focuses on getting to the root cause of the issue, or in other words, why I might be suffering from those symptoms in the first place. The session will explore how LearningMethods works in the all-too-common example of performance anxiety. We will uncover what underlies the unpleasant symptoms of nervousness, fear, and doubt... Why we get seduced into trying to get rid of symptoms, and fail to catch the misconceived way we think communication and judgment happens between artist and audience.
